Program Overview
As student populations become more diverse across the country, school districts have the important goal of hiring teachers who mirror the diversity of students in classrooms. Midland University aims to meet this goal with the Teacher Career Ladder. In this two-year program, para-educators earn a Secondary Education degree with a subject endorsement in Special Education (7-12).
Acceptance into this program requires the following:
*employment as a para-educator in a 7-12 classroom,
*recommendation by the para's school district and/or supervisor,
*completion of required general education courses,
Any exceptions to those requirements must be approved by the dean of the Walker School of Education.
While the courses in this program are integrated, learning outcomes and major assessments are aligned with the Walker School of Education undergraduate program. Field based experience requirements are typically met by the day-to-day work of the para-educator in classrooms, providing authentic connections to course work and a strong basis for application, reflection, and continuous improvement. Required field-based experiences must be completed with a certified cooperating teacher who has completed a minimum of three years of teaching experience.

Core Requirements: A minimum of 40 credits from the following categories: Humanities, Math, Speech/Communications, Science (Including a lab).
